manila fine vinyls is the label project created by edo arengi (shadow sync) back in 2010 to bring out that soulful side of techno we all love. unlike some freaks you can hear around nowadays, the manila fine vinyls productions have their roots in the original detroit sound: no frills, no virtual mockeries, just the full and deep analog sound that goes straight to your heart. music is a matter of substance, not of decorations! this second release includes two brand new tunes produced at the barricade, edos studio located in the heart of berlin. more feelings, with its electric piano chords and the moog bass line, is a well balanced blend of a fat groove and sweet azmospheres. techno with a little touch romanticism! i want to believe, a deeper tune built around a powerful, hypnotising sh-101 line with a delightful slide, is opened by touching string chords and grows as the various percussive elements are added creating a thicker rhythmic texture. its unsophisticated music, its the original spirit of techno.

fennesz writes: seven stars was recorded in vienna in january 2011. i recorded and mixed the album within 3 weeks. liminal and july were existing pieces which i have reworked. (i wrote an early version of liminal in a hotel room in bali in 2010). there is also a version of liminal that i have been playing live for some time. my friend steven hess, with whom i have worked before, happened to be in vienna at the time of the sessions, so i invited him to join me in the studio. christoph amann recorded the drums using a selection of his great microphones including his amazing new josephson

yellorange must be considered one of the most prolific house music labels in history. founded in 1998 by the legendary tony humphries, the label closed its doors after a short run only in 2003 when strictly rhythm (who handled its distribution) collapsed. in those few years, the label put out nothing but quality music, with many - if not all - of these releases being considered a classic nowadays as you would imagine, there are lots of unreleased mixes to be discovered, and for years the fans have eagerly awaited the return of the label in hope some of these gems would see the light of the day. finally the wait is over and yellorange is back with >yellorange history - the kept it to ourselves mixes<, a collection of previously unreleased mixes by kerri chandler, paul simpson and david harness available on limited coloured vinyl. first come, first served!

the kid is back... august darnell a.k.a. kid creole returns in style with his first studio album in over 10 years this autumn, i wake up screaming, an epic comeback recorded for strut at kid creoles sweden hq and mixed by brennan green (chinatown records).

big with timo maas, reboot, butch, paco osuna, hermanez and many more. coeur de lion is a deep techno and mental track using dark voices to give a kind of religious atmosphere. on the remix the cadenza artist salvatore freda, and his friend yvan genkins, inject a dose of percus and synths which give another dimension to the original and should push it to the top. on the flip the original of stand is another driving number. deep with some acid touches using pads to give a floating sensations before sticking us on the dancefloor with dark speaks. the desolat artist m.in gives more muscles and groove to the original using his talent to deliver a dancefloor hits.

the second serving from schmorgasbord brings together two relatively disparate and unrelated artists, but who both share a uniquely twisted approach to making music. s-max has been doing his thing for some time, running legendary home all things bizarre in house and techno, boogizm, and releasing a special kind of groove on labels such as telegraph, 7th city and karloff. his original track, >ms. rosen dub<, swaggers and sways with the spirit of classic yorkshire bleeps and bass. the groove is house, but the spirit of adventure is most definitely techno. his remix of spatials >corti< takes a very different approach, taking a rolling, jungle-like approach to dubstep and nailing it to the groove with stabbing bass notes. spatial leapt onto the bass music radar late 2008 with his shadowy infrasonics imprint, and quickly snapped heads with his crisp, refined approach to 2-step rhythms. since then he’s done things on his own terms, only releasing for himself and mutating his sound over a series of 10 inches. >corti< perfectly demonstrates spatials unconventional tendencies, lurching and buckling around a perfectly honed splatter of beats, off-centre synths and delirious vocal snippets. meanwhile on his remix of s-max, spatial flips the script once again with a stomping, swung techno angle that hammers the original into an uptempo, fist-pumping banger.

special extended vinyl edition plus cd release ltd to 1000 copies! the cocoon compilation k, being the longplay flagship in the cocoon catalogue, adequately starts the second decade of the label with a musical imperative. but dont worry: even if the letter k has sometimes been misused as an indicator for the degree of hardness of some sonic noise in the past of the tech-house scene, >k< is definitely the deepest survey of contemporary electronic dance music that has ever seen the light of day on cocoon recordings!! please note: the full-length versions of all tracks are only available in the 6-vinyl edition !!!

mr bratley drops 2 slo-house workouts on his foto debut. this sound is big and brash with insistent stabs and filter sweeps over the top of some thumping pitch-down house beats. on the flip things get even heavier with get up, a dark, pulsating beast which ups the jack factor whilst maintaining a slow tempo. to round things off label boss ooft! pulls this sound into solid deep house territory with a smoother mix which still contains some serious bottom-end.

iberian records feature on their seventh release an ep from migrant (aka 23hz) who comes with three slabs of soundsystem funk and groovy vibes. >limbic sistim< kicks off proceedings with a building arrangement into a catchy vocal lick – all underpinned with tight beats and warm subs. >acid sumatra< works on a similar tip but ups the tribal and percussive pressure on a deeper insistent rub. whilst >pipe club< brings some classic two-steppy flavours into the mix but cleverly reinforced with massive sub weight. these three tunes are taken from migrants forthcoming album, also entitled >exit plan<. more bass n groove from the lisbon and barcelona based label that should find favour with the deeper end of both dubstep and uk funky scenes.’ early support by scratcha dva, ghosts on tape, kid606, chrissy muderbot, cardopusher, slackk, mesak, phaeleh, deville, bunzer0, throwing snow.

the three tracker gets off with a lovely post basic channel, dub techno interpretation of a techno track for the warmer days. the b side does a great job in fusing soft beats and low key melodies with raw structure,drive and pressure. plangent records slowly becomes the face for the otherside of berlin techno together with a label such as giegling. gritty deep techno, with some influences from dubstep here and there... slowly moving away from the much abused detroit reference. definitely worth the listen!

next up on tom tragos voyage direct series is maxi mill, a young producer from amsterdam. maxi mill came up under the wings of tom trago, co-producing some of tragos tracks, like >steppin out< or >200 b.c<! >to the next< / >sun rays< is his debut release and showcases his love for raw, dirty and syncopated house music. a hot debut from a producer we will surely hear more of soon. he makes up for another voyage direct banger. the voyage continues

following on from the furious 601 release we revisit the aquasky single and ask some mates of ours to go in on the remix tip and try and add some of their own bass induced mayhem and here, ladies and gentlemen, is the end result. not for the faint hearted or those of an uneasy disposition.

the first world unknown 12 inch kicks off with a slamming piece of prototype house from glasgows naum gabo aka jonnie wilkes from optimo and his production partner james savage. showing that a relatively low pace doesnt mean any drop in energy levels and dancefloor pump power, whop! cracks along like something from an alternate reality version of 1980’s chicago. its as easy to imagine it rocking the house at medusas or the box as it is to envision it in the present day soundtracking some kind of bizarro fetish party or a particularly intense session at berghain’s lab-oratory. this is jacking in the true sense of the word. on the flip side italian born berlin resident franz underwear ups the tempo with a stunning piece of slamming european musclebeat. shades of ibiza 88-89 pervade here, the kind of pumping, chunky synth action, teutonic vocal exhortations and vaguely menacing but ultimately benign vibe that sent thousands of potty european kids totally round the bend and changed the world of dance music forever.

hallucination limited delivers a limited edition vinyl only release from none other than fellow new yorker… zev of wolf + lamb. gathered here are zevs strongest outings for the club since the brilliant >forget the world feat. beckford<. we dare say this is his best work to date with >queen of hearts< being one of the freshest takes we have heard on good ole house music this year. pushing all the right buttons, but also some most would never think to. queen of hearts feat. panu moon the initial groove instantly does what all great house does, but what follows are the contemplative vocals of a showman on the road via panu moons soft country drawl… playfully tweaked by zev adding an edge without taking away from panus croon. an unexpected techno vibe begins to ebb and flow over the groove yet it all magically stays together through the voice of a man searching for the queen of his heart. its house music with both an edge and sense of humor not unlike paperclip people, but in a vein more akin to >every now and then< by ralph falcon

if you were to cut neville watson he would bleed acid house, he would also quite likely knock you flat on your arse for having the temerity to wave a knife at him, but thats a whole other story. for his first wu contribution he ventures down the ethereal proto-house boulevard. jacking 707 patterns, a bouncing juno bassline and outer-space synth lines take you into the upper atmosphere for a glorious airborne joyride. as ever, neville manages to evoke those 85-89 feelings without ever sounding merely retro or like some kind of pastiche, something that many attempt but very few manage to pull off. over on side u apiento, the force behind the magisterially brilliant testpressing website, chips in with a heartfelt homage to the new beat sound. another testimony to the fact that a lower tempo doesnt have to mean diminished energy levels, the orange place simply oozes class from top to bottom. like some lost ancienne belgique classic it pounds and pumps along, building up the tension all the while until the quasi- eastern refrain lets loose half way thru and all of a sudden a mystic portal opens up in the space-time continuum that leads all the way to southwark street in late 87.

slamming remix ep. the first track of this ep is a special vinyl version which is a bit more trippy than the 2010 original. the second one is a remix by solan who take the vocals and pitch them down to create a fantastic detroit-styled remix. matthias meyer and patlac who are well known from their latest releases on labels like cecille, liebe*detail and baalsaal contribute with the second remix, an incredible tech-house bomb that will surely do the job on every floor of this planet. last but not least filtertypen spice up the original with their unique rhythms and some fresh new chords.…

in denmark, there rages a lively and experimental techno scene - and its not only a recent phenomenon. the best proof are phono and kemi, two danish imports to the berlin record label, highgrade records. the two chaps complement each other in a musically virtuoso fashion: phono, jacob thiessen, spent his childhood playing around with sequencers and drum machines: over the years he has stuck to this passion and as such, has developed a reputation as an experienced house and techno producer. kim kemi, by contrast, has been a dj since the beginning, and since the 90s has been one of the key figures in the copenhagen club scene. together they have not only performed regularly at the biggest events in denmarks capital, but have also ensured through their many releases, ever changing accents and atmospheres on the turntables. this wealth of combined musical experience can be heard instantly on their latest outing for highgrade – >decompose<. the three tracks, >decompose<, >exterminators< & >last night< assemble rhythms that come from punk, elegant voices and dizzying loops a multi-layered sound excursion. the result is a perfectly produced ep, but one that has not been ironed smooth. with the >made in denmark< seal of quality, phono and kemi bring some extra depth to the party attitude

the 3rd various artists on ostwind records, >secrets part 3< presents 2 new artists making their debut on ostwind. quinto and jeahmon, introducing themselves with incredibly convincing tracks, were taken into our hearts quickly. attaching utmost importance to sound, feeling and heart, we extend a warm welcome to them. sandru and josh are well-known faces of our house and will complete this vinyl with their unique tunes.

bite sized beats vol. 4 brings back the kentucky fried duo corduroy mavericks to partake in a deep fried fandango. some jams are fantastically tasty on their own just like a lot of your favorite foods, but sometimes you take that extra step by battering it, and throwing it in the deep frier till its a nice golden brown. that is just what c-mavs did to a stevie wonder classic on their crispy bit >funky jazz<. they fried that bitch up just right and shot the flavor units through the roof just like the miracle of a deep friend twinkee.

the index is a project by two of new york city s underground music pioneers, raz mesinai aka badawi and dub war founder dave q. the label centers on original badawi productions at the intersection of dub and modern composition, as well as new works and remixes by some of the most forward-thinking artists at the outer limits of dubstep and experimental electronica. the first release was 2010 s head-melting el topo / dstry all pfrfts team-up with shackleton, and this second entry finds badawi reviving new york s dystopian hip hop lineage via a collaboration with the legendary mc sensational of jungle brothers and wordsound fame. no schnitzel is a militant, mind-bending half-step rhythm that sensational weaves in and out of, creating a new form of dubstep-hip hop hybrid with a unique bad apple flavor. the dubbed-out version strips it down to the instrumental roots, while flipside more schnitzel goes deeper into abstracted acid dubstep for the more adventurous soundsystem selectors.

2011 is shaping up to be quite some year for d&b’s most famous imprint, metalheadz. after a clutch of releases from the frighteningly talented new generation of ‘headz artists, this latest 12” sees goldie’s legendary label welcome back one of its original and most defining artists, j majik, alongside his production partner of the last eight years, wickaman.j majik is one of the most important jungle/d&b artists of all time, with a discography that spans an astonishing 17 years and takes in almost every style and sound in the genre’s history. from early, groundbreaking jungle productions such as ‘your sound’ and ‘apache’, through house-inspired anthems such as ‘love is not a game’ and ‘solarise’, to the floor-flattening new school jump up of ‘dubplate killaz’ and the euphoric, vocal-led ‘crazy world’ – j majik is an artist who really has done it all.
